HVAC Controls Specialist / Office-Based Programming, Service & Sales Support
About the Position

We are seeking an experienced HVAC Controls Specialist for a primarily office-based role supporting our project, service and sales departments. This position is ideal for someone with strong HVAC controls knowledge who wants to apply their technical experience in a programming, coordination, and customer-service capacity rather than working full-time in the field.

The successful candidate will assist with HVAC controls programming, service support, customer communication, documentation, proposals, and coordination between technicians, customers, vendors, and internal departments. Experience with Honeywell and Johnson Controls platforms is strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write, modify, review, and support HVAC control programs using Honeywelland Johnson Controls
  • Provide office-based technical support to field technicians troubleshooting HVAC controls and building automation systems.
  • Review service reports, control drawings, wiring diagrams, equipment information, and sequences of operation.
  • Assist with diagnosing control system issues remotely when possible.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and field troubleshooting on an as-needed basis.
  • Help prepare service proposals, repair quotes, control upgrade recommendations, and scope descriptions.
  • Communicate with customers regarding service status, follow-up items, recommended repairs, and scheduling.
  • Coordinate with vendors for parts, pricing, technical information, and product support.
  • Maintain accurate service documentation, programming records, job notes, equipment information, and customer history.
  • Assist the service department with scheduling support, job coordination, work order review, and closeout documentation.
  • Assist the sales department with technical review, proposal preparation, and customer follow-up.
  • Help identify opportunities for control system repairs, upgrades, replacements, and preventive maintenance.
  • Support internal processes to improve service department organization, responsiveness, and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Experience with HVAC controls, building automation systems, or DDC controls.
  • Familiarity with Honeywelland/or Johnson Controls programming and service tools.
  • Strong understanding of commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems, including rooftop units, air handlers, VAV systems, boilers, chillers, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, control drawings, wiring diagrams, and sequences of operation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills related to HVAC controls and system operation.
  • Comfortable working in an office environment using computers, email, spreadsheets, service software, and documentation tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, technicians, vendors, and internal team members.
  • Valid driver’s license required for occasional site visits.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Honeywell WEBs, Niagara, Johnson Controls Metasys, or similar BAS platforms.
  • Prior experience as an HVAC controls technician, service technician, dispatcher, service coordinator, or technical support specialist.
  • Experience preparing service documentation, proposals, estimates, or customer-facing recommendations.
  • Knowledge of control wiring, BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, networking, and BAS communication protocols.
  • Experience supporting commercial HVAC service operations.

Work Environment

This is primarily an office-based position. The role will focus on programming support, technical assistance, documentation, customer communication, proposal support, and coordination with field technicians. Occasional field visits may be required for site review, startup assistance, troubleshooting, commissioning support, or customer meetings.

  • Salary range: $130,000-$160,000

The ideal candidate is an experienced HVAC controls professional who enjoys solving technical problems, supporting technicians, communicating with customers, and helping service and sales operations run smoothly. This role is a strong fit for someone who understands the field but prefers a more office-based position with a mix of controls programming, technical support, administration, and customer interaction.

HVAC Service Technician

HVAC & Refrigeration Technician Responsibilities:

  • Maintains daily workload for maintenance and repair functions within contractual, industry and company standards.
  • ​Identifies value-added upgrades and products for our customers.
  • Notifies company when equipment and/or covered systems fall out of compliance with contract coverage.
  • Repairs and replaces all components of HVAC systems.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs all types of electrical, electronic, digital and pneumatic control systems for equipment, multi-zone and building automation systems.
  • Locates technical support data and field advice directly from equipment manufacturers, vendors, and engineering sources to expedite system diagnosis and repairs.
  • Experience with installation and service troubleshooting of building automation control systems is desirable but not required.
  • Experience with BMS controls systems is desirable but not required.
  • Performing contractual preventative maintenance tasks on an ongoing basis for our contract customers.
  • Working overtime on an as-needed basis, including participating in stand-by.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Essential Functions Include:

  • Lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Reaching for, pulling, pushing construction materials, tools and equipment
  • Setting up ladders; climbing extension and A-frame ladders
  • Traversing rough and uneven surfaces
  • Standing, balancing, walking, kneeling, crawling, stooping, and squatting to access construction and equipment areas, and to complete service and construction tasks
  • Responding to audio and visual warnings and alarms
  • Communicating verbal warnings and signals
  • Operating communication items such as cellphones, tablets, computers, mouse, keyboards
